ELECT JUSTICE 2020 GOTV CAMPAIGN
ROLE: CREATIVE PRODUCEr
brand design, content strategy, event coordination, production, & post-production supervision
A new model for voter engagement and turnout. The purpose of Elect Justice was to empower and mobilize voters of color by providing access to the tools and education they need to register to vote, identify polling locations, and cast their ballots on Election Day of 2020. Elect Justice worked to turnout voters of color by focusing on issues that matter most to us: health care, gun violence, criminal justice, jobs, climate change, policing, and more. This campaign was a major player in the progressive turnout of 2020.
In collaboration with IMPACT Strategies, Black Voters Matter, REP CA, and Tidal, we co-produced an Early Vote event at The Forum in Inglewood, California where we provided groceries, PPE, COVID testing, and an opportunity to drop off ballots for 8,000 community members.Hosted by Angela Rye and Terrence J, the event included live performances and special appearances by Snoop Dogg, Hailey Bieber, Jaden Smith, Katelyn Ohashi, G-Eazy, Tinashe, Common, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and more. To achieve maximum impact and reach, we integrated the event into GOTV activations in 15 key cities in 12 states via live broadcast: Philadelphia, Jacksonville, Jackson (MS), Decatur (GA), Detroit, Cleveland, Birmingham, Houston, Charlotte, Columbia (SC), Baton Rouge, and Inglewood.
Digital Strategy
Amidst a pandemic, the heavy lifting of activating civic engagement for the election of our lifetimes had to go digital. We pushed our early voting events, voting info, and voting activism through social media content.
We call in our broad network of celebrities, activists, and the cutest advocates, the kids. Videos were created and reshared by campaign leader, Angela Rya as well as friends like Will Smith, Viola Davis, Snoop Dogg, the Biebers, and many more.
Every election year, politicians ask Black and brown communities to show up to the polls and deliver their votes with promises of health, social, and economic improvement. However, our lived experiences demonstrate that racial injustice, economic exclusion, and voter suppression continue as barriers to our success and liberation no matter who is in the White House. Even though the country was and is desperate for change, turning out voters of color posed a challenge because of false promises made throughout history.
Because of the incredible organizers on the ground and campaigns like Elect Justice, the 2020 election had the highest registered voter turnout in modern history.
Amidst the garbage fire of 2020, this campaign was a creative release and incredible joy. More crucial elections to come. You can get involved too.
